Museum Gallerie d’Italia Napoli

Five floors of extraordinary collections with a gastronomic hub among the best in Italy

by Lavinia Colonna Preti

The Naples location of the visionary Gallerie d’Italia project which, together with the museums of Milan, Turin and Vicenza, exhibits the art collections of Intesa Sanpaolo: 5 floors of extraordinary works, from precious Greek ceramics to masterpieces by Caravaggio to the modernity of Schifano, with a gastronomic hub among the best in Italy.

Designed by architect Marcello Piacentini in the late 1930s and formerly home to the Banco di Napoli, the building, redesigned internally by architect and interior designer Michele De Lucchi, opened in 2022, continuing and expanding the exhibition and cultural initiatives offered in the nearby Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano until that date.

Overlooking the central Via Toledo, the Gallerie d’Italia museum hosts three important exhibition itineraries over 10,000 meters: Neapolitan art from the 17th to the 20th century, with absolute masterpieces such as the Martyrdom of Saint Ursula by Caravaggio, the collection of Attic and Magna Graecia ceramics of exceptional artistic quality dating back to the 5th and 3rd centuries BC, in dialogue with classical finds from the MANN, and an important selection of twentieth-century works curated by Luca Massimo Barbero with works by Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Piero Manzoni, Mario Schifano, Jannis Kounellis, Sol LeWitt, Afro, Ernesto Tatafiore, Domenico Gnoli.

Some of the most beautiful masterpieces of Naples in a unique architectural context.

In addition to the most famous masterpieces, the museum also houses many Neapolitan “gems” such as the extraordinary collection of sculptures and portraits by Vincenzo Gemito, a refined designer and goldsmith, a great protagonist of Italian Realism, or some of the most beautiful landscapes of the Grand Tour era, such as the paintings of the Dutchman Gaspar van Wittel, including a wonderful view of Naples from the early 1700s.

There are also many temporary exhibitions and cultural initiatives organized regularly, such as the current event “Andy Warhol. Triple Elvis” which displays together for the first time the graphic cycles Marilyn, Mao Tse-Tung and Electric Chairs, in addition to the iconic work of Elvis Presley, which can be visited until May 4, 2025.

The Gallerie d’Italia also host the gastronomic project of the starred chef from Campania Giuseppe Iannotti which is made up, between the ground floor and the top floor, of 4 worlds of excellence: Luminist Cafè é Bistrot open all day, the fine dining restaurant 177Toledo and Anthill cocktail & tapas bar both open only in the evening.

One of the most beautiful museum centers in Italy that embraces excellence in every aspect of Campania culture, from art to food to architecture.

The Secret

Inside the museum, you can still see the old management offices of the Banco di Napoli, a museum within a museum for the richness of their decorations, and in particular the “President’s Lounge” designed by the architect Piacentini with beautiful boiserie and “design” accessories, such as the desk lamp by Fontana Arte, a company founded in 1932 by Gio Ponti and Pietro Chiesa.
