On the top floor of the Gallerie d’Italia museum in Naples, 177Toledo is the fine dining restaurant that represents the idea of Neapolitan cuisine seen through the eyes of the starred chef from Campania Giuseppe Iannotti who here combines art, taste, and cultured irony to give life to unforgettable gastronomic experiences.
The promise of a magical evening begins upon arrival. To dine at 177Toledo, you enter through the main entrance of the Gallerie d’Italia museum in the heart of the central Via Toledo and, only by reservation, you are escorted by the staff to the top floor of the building with a breathtaking view of the rooftops of the historic center and a terrace that looks out over the Certosa di San Martino from a unique perspective.
You then cross the hall of the vibrant Anthill cocktail & tapas bar, which completes the gastronomic project of Gallerie d’Italia together with Luminist Cafè & Bistrot on the ground floor, and then enter the restaurant where six tables wind along a long room characterized by dark wood furniture and eight paintings by Mario Schifano on the walls (one for each letter of his surname).
One of the most theatrical and, at the same time, traditional and creative addresses in Italy.
This is the setting where the Campania chef Giuseppe Iannotti, already 2 Michelin stars with its Kresios restaurant in Telese Terme and a degree in computer engineering, stages his histrionic, creative, intelligent, obsessive, ironic idea of cooking.
Born in Sannio, in the province of Benevento, from a family, primarily his mother Elvira, who passed on to him a strong culinary passion, Iannotti is an entrepreneur chef who has traveled – and continues to travel – the world to create a cuisine that remains faithful to local flavors, reinterpreted with great technique and originality.
At 177Toledo, assisted by chef Antonio Grazioli, who is joined by sous chef Ciro Robustelli, you can choose between 2 tasting menus, the “71” and the “22”, numbers that recall the Neapolitan Smorfia (the first is “the man without value”, the second “the fool”). “Smorfia” is a sort of traditional cabala where particular dreamt-of element corresponds to one of the 90 Lotto numbers. All the courses have a number that indicates them, a symbolism which is a tribute to Neapolitan culture, just one of the many divertissements that distinguish the entire project.
Both itineraries tell the story of Campania gastronomy in general with culturally iconic recipes such as “pizza”, “mozzarella in carozza” and “capitone” among the appetizers, to then arrive at the main dishes such as “o’ raù”, pasta with Neapolitan ragù, and “parmigiana di melanzane”, a tribute to that of mamma Elvira.
A journey that will never cease to tempt and entertain you from start to finish. An example of this is the amuse bouche with the chef’s version of the “cuoppo di pesci”, that is, the unmissable take-away fried fish of Neapolitan street food that here becomes, with even more taste, a rice chip served with shrimp heads, anchovies and seaweed.
177toledo is a continuous surprise: nothing is ever what it seems, even the sculptures that are found at each table depicting curious characters with their heads “in the clouds” lead, without revealing too much, to the final coup de théâtre of the dinner.
The service is incredible, part of the experience in the story of the chef’s vision and very skilled in making the guest feel at the center of an evening that you would like to never end.
Open only in the evening, each reservation is assigned not only one of the internal tables but also an external one on the terrace, to be experienced as a summer lounge reserved for an equally special aperitif or after dinner with the high mixology offered by the adjacent Anthill cocktail & tapas bar.
The perfect experience? Visit the museum Gallerie d’Italia until closing time and book an aperitif at the counter at Anthill, then let yourself be led through the evening by the exceptional maitre and sommelier Andrea Lanzillo who will delight you at the table with extraordinary pairings and stories.
One of the best and most elegant addresses in Naples.
The Secret
177Toledo is located in the former Palazzo del Banco di Napoli, a splendid example of rationalist architecture. Inside, you can still visit the old management offices of the bank, a “museum within a museum” due to the richness of their decorations, such as, in particular, the “President’s Lounge” with beautiful wood paneling and “design” accessories, such as the desk lamp by Fontana Arte, a company founded in 1932 by Gio Ponti and Pietro Chiesa.
