Da Mimmo Lo Stuzzichino (NA)

by Lavinia Colonna Preti

In Sant’Agata, a village in Massa Lubrense, Mimmo is a true institution: famous for the best traditional cuisine and the world he has created around his osteria made up of a vegetable garden, a charming B&B, a cooking school and, even, a little Trenino del Gusto.

That of the De Gregorio family is a modern fairy tale that begins with a small village rotisserie and today celebrates one of the best osterias in Italy and the birth of a community of small local producers and artisans who work together to bring the best of the Sorrento peninsula to the table.

Osteria Lo Stuzzichino is located, in fact, in the small center of Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi, a little hamlet part of Massa Lubrense, a wonderful corner of Italy rich in tradition, agriculture, livestock farming, fishing, humanity, but above all an incredible concentration of starred restaurants and fine dining.

A quality restaurant cannot exist if there is no a quality local production network.

(Mimmo)

Mimmo started right here, in the small family rotisserie opened in 1989 together with mother Filomena and father Paolo, still firmly in the kitchen today together with their son, and little by little he began to become more and more passionate about good food.

He studied, gained experience in the great Michelin-starred neighbors (from Quattro Passi and Don Alfonso 1890) and then began to transform Lo Stuzzichino until it became the Best Trattoria in Italy according to the Gambero Rosso guide in 2015.

Looking carefully at the menu, in fact, the recipes are all traditional ones, but, once the dishes arrive on the table, you can see a skillful union between ancient wisdom, technique and contemporary emotions: the fried foods are very light, the dishes beautiful, the vibe fun and vibrant. Here is Mimmo’s magic touch.

The rest is done by the exceptional raw material of the Sorrento and Amalfi coasts. Right in front of Lo Stuzzichino, Mimmo created Orto Ghezi in 2022, a wonderful vegetable garden where he grows organic products for his restaurant.

In his philosophy, the fulcrum of an eatery is to grow together with the territory and local producers who support the same love for a short and sustainable supply chain. The list of his supplier friends is a spectacle and all are worth a visit: from the nearby Caesificio Il Turuziello to the Pastificio Gerardo di Nola in Gragnano, from Antonino Morvillo for the Crapolla pot shrimp to Gennaro De Angelis, producer of chickens from Casarlano. As well as many Slow Food presidia.

The menu is varied and delicious: from shrimps from Crapolla sautéed with salt and pepper to aubergine parmigiana, from artisanal Gragnano pasta seasoned with piennolo tomatoes from Vesuvius to cannelloni alla Sorrentina, up to the free-range chicken cooked in the oven or the fish catch of the day.
The fried foods such as croquettes and mozzarella in carrozza are memorable.

The place, in addition to being good, is also very beautiful: blue Vietri ceramics match the colors of the boiserie and chairs, the gray marbles contrast with the warmth of the olive wood used for some tables and, on the walls, many souvenir photos, plaques of prizes and works of art.

The Osteria also offers a “vault” wine cellar with over 600 labels and a convivial table where truly special “banquets” are staged.

And, for those who wish to stay, Mimmo has also recently opened the D&B Casa Dora, a tribute to his wife Dora, a small B&B located next to the restaurant and furnished with multicolored ceramics, where check-in is done together with a Lemon Spritz.

Lo Stuzzichino also offers many other experiences: tastings and the cooking school, which are held in the beautiful room with a convivial table located next to the tavern or in Orto Ghezi. And here’s another gem: the Trenino del Gusto also passes in front of the restaurant, a small blue and white circular train that stops at some of the most renowned farms in Massa Lubrense and at the most beautiful panoramic points (consult the website for stops and itineraries, the train can also be privatized on request).

Lo Stuzzichino has almost become a “village” within the village that Mimmo continues to grow: on the other hand, his smile and energy are so contagious that it is difficult to resist him. In short, Mimmo creates (healthy) addiction.

The Secret

A mermaid is drawn in the Lo Stuzzichino logo. Sant’Agata is, in fact, called the Land of the Sirens because legend has it that Odysseus, during his return to Ithaca, sailed the seas of Campania and met the sirens. Death of pain for not being able to enchant him, they transformed into the three islets today called Li Galli, Sirenuse for the ancients.
