In Frattamaggiore, a former hemp factory combines earth-inspired cuisine with a stunning Mediterranean garden

by Lavinia Colonna Preti

In Frattamaggiore, a few kilometers from Naples, Raraterra is located in a former hemp factory. This restaurant blends industrial archaeology with cuisine inspired by the earth and its primordial elements, enhanced by a wonderful Mediterranean garden.

Founded in 2021 in a former industrial factory in the historic center of Frattamaggiore, Raraterra is the brainchild of Angelo Cesaro and Gio Nardi, Neapolitan entrepreneurs and lifelong friends with decades of experience in the food and beverage entertainment industry. Their desire to reclaim the agricultural identity of the Campania region with a youthful and contemporary twist is reflected in Raraterra’s creation.

Between the 19th and 20th centuries, Frattamaggiore was one of Italy’s main hubs for the production and processing of hemp, a strategic supply chain for the local economy and for the textile and naval industries, particularly linked to the production of ropes and other products, which is evoked in the venue’s interior.

Raraterra is the harmonious blend of simplicity and sophistication. The simplicity of the earth, of nature, and of ancient raw materials, but also the cult of beauty in every small form.

The design, a tribute to the land

The restaurant project was conceived by FADD Architects, who reimagined the former industrial area, using memories of the past as a guide in the design process.

Exposed brick, stone, and warm, boldly colored cladding create a space characterized by walnut wood paneling on the walls and a Viennese straw sofa facing the fireplace.

Meanwhile, the exterior offers a wonderful garden, truly unique in the Neapolitan area, with teak floors, a pergola marking the extension of the dining room, and charming tables covered with sails tied between the trees, as well as a garden of medicinal herbs used daily.

Angelo and Gio have chosen many stylish details, such as works by Gaetano Pesce, photos by photographer friends like Raffo Marone, as well as ceramics decorated with phrases dear to them, such as “simplicity is a rare thing,” the restaurant’s motto.

The Menu and Drinks List

The dishes, through “grandmothers’ recipes”, tell the story of a contemporary Naples, updated with cutting-edge techniques and and carefully selected raw materials. The drink pairing is focused on artisanal wines from Campania, France, Croatia, Spain, and Austria. A wide and diverse selection of spirits and liqueurs is also available.

The menu, perfect for sharing, features appetizers and first courses, including O’ Curniciell, Stuffed Cornetto Pepper, Classic Meatballs in Raraterra Sauce, and “Nonstrana” Pasta and Potatoes with provola fondue, crispy pancetta, and lemon zest. Among the second courses, refined cuts such as the Creekston Farm American Black Angus Ribeye or the Scottona Cutlet with seasonal vegetables.

How to Enjoy the Raraterra Experience

Raraterra is the perfect place for those seeking an escape from the city, perhaps taking advantage of the beautiful veranda and carefully tended garden, which invites you to relax and enjoy high-quality cuisine.

The restaurant organizes many events, such as weekend brunches and tasting evenings with the restaurant’s culinary partners.

The Secret

Once the project began, Gio, going to the hemp factory for a site inspection with his mother, discovered from an old photo still hanging on the walls that his great-grandmother was a “canapina” (hemp worker) who had worked in that very place, a sort of pre-written destiny linked to this splendid location.
