Il Quinto Elemento
The new inn and wine bistro, featuring a secret terrace overlooking the historic heart of Teano
In the historic center of Teano, in the province of Caserta, a historic building houses Il Quinto Elemento—a charming inn featuring a wine bistro, guest rooms, and a rooftop garden that overlooks the city’s ancient rooftops, domes, and bell towers.
In a lesser-known corner of Campania, the town of Teano preserves a history that stretches back thousands of years, with roots reaching from the Roman era to the splendor of the Middle Ages. It is here—at 64 Vico Viola, just a stone’s throw from the ancient Porta Napoli—that a long-abandoned historic building has been transformed into a contemporary inn, designed for those who appreciate beauty, fine food, and a rich wine culture.
The project was born from a dream shared by Maurizio Landolfi, an engineer with a passion for gastronomy, and Gloria Cinquegrana who, after years spent working as a corporate manager, left everything behind to help breathe new life into the narrow streets of this small town—a place that, in their view, deserved to have its story told. Today, it is Gloria who welcomes guests, and her smile speaks volumes about the success of this decision.
The Fifth Element is an invitation to discover Teano and the ancient history of the Upper Caserta area, starting with the Via Francigena and the Via Adriana, where it is still possible today to walk along the original Roman stone paving.
The Philosophy of the Quintessence and the Secret Hanging Garden
Opened in 2026, the establishment’s name draws upon the Aristotelian concept of the “quintessence”: alongside air, earth, fire, and water, Aristotle posited a fifth element—aether—a pure, immutable, and celestial substance. It evokes the very emotion one feels when tasting an exceptional, artisanal wine.
Designed to capture the “warmth” of inns from a bygone era, the bistro’s interior spaces are centered around a double-sided fireplace, kept lit during the colder months. Outside, a magnificent hanging garden—filled with citrus trees, olive trees, and Mediterranean flora—features a wooden pergola, perfect for romantic al fresco dining.
The Kitchen of Anna Merlino: Handmade Pasta and Ancient Grains
In the kitchen reigns Anna Merlino—an expert cook, baker, and passionate sfoglina (a local term for a skilled artisan who crafts fresh pasta by hand, rolling out the dough with a wooden rolling pin). Her culinary approach is seasonal, sustainable, and deeply rooted in the traditions of the Upper Caserta area. Bread is baked daily using sourdough starter and flour milled from ancient grains, while all fresh egg pasta is prepared entirely by hand.
The menu is organized into four sensory journeys: Terra (Earth)—anchored in local roots, featuring boards of cured meats and cheeses from small-scale regional producers, traditional soups, and pasta dishes reminiscent of a grandmother’s cooking; Fuoco (Fire)—designed for those who crave bold flavors, featuring spiced artisanal cured meats and sauces with a strong, distinctive character; Acqua (Water)—a journey toward the Campanian coast, incorporating preserved seafood, buffalo-milk butter, and pasta dishes infused with the aromas of the Mediterranean; and Aria (Air)—a vegetarian experience where seasonal vegetables, legumes, wild-foraged herbs, and high-quality extra virgin olive oil take center stage.
Rounding out the offering is wine—the true “fifth element” and the common thread running through the entire experience. It features a curated selection of labels from the Campania region, indigenous grape varieties from Roccamonfina, and choice selections from some of Italy’s finest terroirs.
Designer rooms as a base for exploring the Alto Casertano area
On the first floor, a careful restoration has created four guest rooms—Earth, Air, Water, and Fire—featuring designer furnishings, stone accents, and balconies overlooking the ancient village. They serve as the perfect base for exploring the Alto Casertano area.
Teano—often remembered for the historic 1860 meeting between Giuseppe Garibaldi and Victor Emmanuel II, a pivotal moment in the unification of Italy—lies on the slopes of the extinct Roccamonfina volcano and boasts a glorious past. In Roman times, it was a wealthy and strategic capital, situated at the crossroads of the Via Latina and the Via Appia (a UNESCO World Heritage site).
Not far away lie two true gems: the Royal Palace of Caserta and the Belvedere of San Leucio, where King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon established a genuine “royal utopia”—a colony of silk weavers governed by egalitarian laws. San Leucio silks are world-renowned for their quality and still adorn historic palaces today, including the White House and Buckingham Palace. A visit to the royal apartments and terraced gardens offers a breathtaking panorama that blends luxurious industrial heritage with royal splendor.
Open on weekends for aperitifs, lunch, and dinner, Il Quinto Elemento serves as the perfect base for exploring the Alto Casertano region. On Sundays, the restaurant hosts “The Sunday Lunch” (Il Pranzo della Domenica)—a celebration of conviviality featuring a menu that Chef Anna curates anew each time, highlighting seasonal flavors and the joy of sharing a meal.
The Secret
In the hanging garden at Il Quinto Elemento, citrus trees grow; their leaves and essences are used in the kitchen to infuse extra virgin olive oil and the focaccia served at the table. As you sit beneath the pergola at sunset, the view encompasses the skyline of Teano, framed by the contours of the Roccamonfina Natural Park.
