Scotto Jonno (NA)

by Lavinia Colonna Preti

In Naples, the spaces of the former State Treasury of the Banco di Napoli have been transformed into a spectacular “café chantant”, a bistro and cocktail bar inspired in its name and decoration by the glories of the Neapolitan Belle Époque.

Finally, the Principe di Napoli Gallery can experience the grandeur and beauty for which it was designed and inaugurated at the end of the 19th century. After years of oblivion, its rebirth starts right from there, from that distant 1883 when Vincenzo Scotto Jonno from Procida opened the homonymous Café Chantant, which entered the history of the city for its glamor and worldliness.

After years of study and research, Luca Iannuzzi, a visionary entrepreneur with a strong passion for Neapolitan art and culture, with the help of his artist and designer friend Eugenio Tibaldi, has, in fact, completely restored what were the former spaces of the Banco di Napoli Treasury located inside the Gallery, giving them back all their original magnificence.

We were inspired by the beauty of Naples in all its forms and we like to think of Scotto Jonno as a place founded in 1894 with the soul of an ancient cafè chantant.

Thus, in March 2023 Scotto Jonno inaugurated three levels of “good living” inspired by the philological recovery of the place. On the ground floor, with dehors in the Gallery, there is the bistro, the cocktail bar and the spectacular library, dedicated to the literary cafés of the Belle Époque, which already contains over 2,000 consultable volumes.

Everything is taken care of down to the smallest detail: like the walls with the original exposed plaster, the period furniture found in markets all over the world, as well as the logo: a dragonfly, symbol of Art Nouveau and the graceful beauty that conquers everything with its stubborn delicacy.

While on the upper floor there is Sustànza, the fine dining restaurant led by chef Marco Ambrosino who, after a happy experience in Milan with 28 Posti which made him known throughout the world, returned to his hometown Naples to continue to amaze us.

His is a cultured and ancestral cuisine which, despite being strongly linked to a cultural project of rediscovery of the historical roots of Campania, never fails to entertain the chef, first and foremost, but also his lucky guests.

Marco also supervises the bistro’s kitchen, while Scotto Jonno’s drinks offering is carried out by Leandro Ruggero and Marco Penitenti, bar managers, with the advice of the famous mixologist Dom Carella.

From breakfast to after dinner, Scotto Jonno will know how to amuse and entertain you, not failing to excite you with the jazz ensembles and DJ sets that take place on the spectacular stage set up on the mezzanine floor of the venue. Welcome back Scotto Jonno, our beautiful Naples missed you!

The Secret

The bistro offers an international menu that has created a connection with the city: each dish, in fact, tells a story or legend of Naples, from La Strega di Port’Alba to Il Drago di Vico della Serpe.
