Lo Scoglio da Tommaso (NA)

by Lavinia Colonna Preti

In the seaside village of Marina del Cantone, Lo Scoglio has been a legend of the Amalfi Coast since 1958 with its characteristic terrace overlooking the sea, the vintage tender that has ferried celebrities from all over the world and the hospitality of the De Simone family.

Lo Scoglio is one of those restaurants that is “handed down” from regulars from generation to generation, that makes the news in the society colums, that has made the history of a territory.

Almost 70 years have passed since Antonietta and Aniello decided to combine a restaurant with their fishing activity. The fame of the place began quietly, by word of mouth of customers attracted by the wonderful view but above all by the excellent cuisine of Antonietta who, little by little, enchants actors, singers and celebrities from overseas who love to visit the Costiera.

Lo Scoglio, since 1958, has been above all our family.

(De Simone family)

Now run by the third generation of the family, Antonia, Margherita and Tommaso, Lo Scoglio continues to pamper its loyal guests with a traditional cuisine based on fresh products from the sea and the family farm.

In fact, it is from their garden that the tasty vegetables used for the most popular dishes come, from the giant tomato salad to the courgettes used for Spaghetti alla Nerano to the aubergines used in the excellent meatballs with tomato sauce. While the fab seafood is delivered fresh by trusted fishermen every day.

A bond of love and respect, that for the sea, that you can feel in every detail of the wonderful stilt house, built, as you can see looking at it from the side, on a gigantic rock, hence the name of the place (scoglio is a sea rock in Italian).

The terrace is beautiful, built in wood like the deck of a ship and “guarded” by the statue of the god Poseidon with the trident, protector of sailors and fishermen, who romantically observes the sea.

Lo Scoglio is the only hotel restaurant on the coast with a private dock and is known by all for its small wooden boat that ferries guests from the many yachts that dock in the area to the terrace.

Regular customers can be recognized because, as soon as they get on, they enthusiastically greet their captain, Giuseppe, known as “the pirate” of Marina di Cantone, and it is immediately the magic of a glamorous summer.

Definitely a must on the Amalfi Coast.

The Secret

The famous Eduardo De Filippo loved Antonietta’s cooking so much that he dedicated a poem to her that is still framed and hung on the walls of the restaurant today.
