Capri Tiberio Palace

The Grand Hotel that has embodied Capri's Dolce Vita and the allure of the Grand Tour since the 19th century

by Lavinia Colonna Preti

In the heart of Capri, the 5-star luxury Capri Tiberio Palace is an icon of the 19th-century Grand Tour, today reborn thanks to the Shedir Collection group, which has preserved the timeless soul of the Dolce Vita Caprese, including designer ceramics, works of art, and the marvelous view from its famous terraces.

The history of the Capri Tiberio Palace is rooted in the dream of the Morgano family, a veritable dynasty of Capri hoteliers. After taking over the guesthouse in the early 1900s, in 1934 they transformed it into a grand hotel, a haven for the international elite and film stars.

The name chosen is a tribute to Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus, the Roman emperor who chose Capri as his favorite residence. The hotel is located right on Via Tiberio, the historic road that leads from the center of the Piazzetta to the summit of Mount Tiberius and the famous Villa Jovis.

…The most beautiful trip in the world, according to my taste and experience, is the island of Capri.

(Goffredo Parise)

An “imperial” hospitality with a forward-looking feel

Sold by the Morgano family in 2006, the Capri Tiberio Palace was reborn in 2011 after a lengthy restoration under the guidance of Eduardo Safdie, a visionary Argentine entrepreneur and Roman by adoption. Safdie founded the Shedir Collection and has preserved the “private residence” character so beloved by guests, while maintaining an unbreakable bond with Capri’s history and most authentic soul.

The Design: the allure of the Grand Tour through time and space

Its extraordinary interior design is the result of a masterful renovation by the ingenious architect Giampiero Panepinto, who combined exotic influences and collectibles from Capri in the 1950s and 1960s with symbols of the Grand Tour, such as leather trunks and wicker chairs.

Every floor is a journey. The 54 rooms and suites, each unique, are treasure troves of beauty filled with rare books, antiques discovered at flea markets around the world, boldly colored Vietri ceramics, and vintage prints. The design celebrates the theme of “Journey”: antique maps, vintage trunks, and details reminiscent of the routes of great explorers, all rendered in a palette of stardust, turquoise, coral, and lemon yellow.

The Bellevue Suite: Capri’s largest and most scenic

Located at the hotel’s highest and most panoramic point, the Bellevue Suite is a residence spanning over 250 square meters, the largest on the island. It opens into a light-filled living room, where 1950s-era modern furnishings blend with unique contemporary design pieces and exquisite silks in shades of turquoise and ochre.

But the true enchantment lies outside: a vast terrace seemingly suspended in mid-air, offering a 360-degree view that encompasses the entire island, from the cliffs of Anacapri to the azure outline of the Gulf of Naples. Here, among Mediterranean plants and designer outdoor furniture, lies a scenic heated hydromassage pool, perfect for sipping a glass of champagne at sunset.

The Experience: Jacky Bar and local cuisine

The beating heart of the establishment is Jacky Bar, a tribute to 1950s Cuba and the elegance of Jackie Kennedy. Here, amidst a white piano and a collection of Panama hats hanging on the walls, the atmosphere becomes magical at sunset.

The Terrazza Tiberio restaurant completes the dream, offering cuisine that celebrates local flavors—from the freshest fish to garden vegetables—reinterpreted with a light modernity, to be enjoyed while gazing out over the endless horizon of the sea.

The Spa and the Panoramic Pool

The Tiberio Spa is a wellness retreat spread across two levels, blending Eastern aesthetics with Mediterranean warmth, inspired by ancient Roman baths.

The true beating heart is the indoor & outdoor pool, a masterpiece of design where the water seems to flow seamlessly from the interior to the outdoor terrace, allowing you to swim surrounded by colorful majolica tiles and artistic installations.

The Secret

Panepinto wanted the hotel to tell the story of romantic travel, that of ocean liners and great voyages. To do so, he spent months combing the antique markets of Paris, London, and the Naples area, amassing dozens of leather trunks, vulcanized fiber suitcases, and vintage hatboxes. Inside some of them, the architect placed “treasures,” such as a collection of original old postcards of Capri, some handwritten and never sent, dating back to the Morgano’s inauguration in 1934.
